African Wormwood [Artemisia afra] is a medicinal plant that has been used for treating a variety of ailments. The roots, stems and leaves are taken as enemas for febrile complaints, poultices, infusions, body washes, lotions, smoked, snuffed or drunk as a tea.

It is also used as a moth repellent, in organic insecticidal sprays, as a body wash, smoked, snuffed or drunk as a tea. 

Artemisia afra has a very bitter taste and is usually sweetened with sugar or honey when drunk. The fresh leaves are often added to boiling water and the vapours inhaled.

Also known as Wormwood or Sagewood (English); Wildeals (Afrikaans); Umhlonyane (Xhosa); Umhlonyane (Zulu); Lengana (Sotho).
